Not a dull day in Dullstroom
Today we opted for a nice, restful day in Dullstroom.

Not your average Pancake House - creative gourmet fare, indeed, including starter courses before the “mains.” I’ll spare you pictures of all we ate (although I took them!), but here are the amazing scotch eggs (served on a slab of slate) we both chose for the main course:

Wait - what? I thought it only felt like we’d completely circled the globe...

Last night we had dinner at a nearby restaurant, Mrs. Simpson’s (as in Wallis Simpson, for the love of whom King George VI abdicated the throne). We asked our server/restaurant proprietor for recommendations for places to eat breakfast, and she strongly suggested a place called the Art of Food.

I’ve always wondered what scotch eggs are - here they are boiled eggs (we requested hard boiled - they’re usually soft), carefully peeled, dipped in batter and then breadcrumbs, and deep fried. Delicious! That’s crisp fried Parmesan cheese separating the two halves, with bacon to top it all off.
We also enjoyed talking to the owner, whose son is planning a cross country road trip in the US with a couple friends.
After breakfast we walked along the main street and checked out shops. We did a double take at this one -

One shop we visited specialized in fishing rods - not surprising here - where we talked at length with the owner’s father who retired here from Scotland eleven years ago. We really enjoy conversations like this where we get a chance to get a “local” perspective.
After stopping at a grocery store to get a few supplies, we headed back to Peace Corner for a quiet afternoon which was periodically interrupted by very loud screeching peacocks and a rip-roaring thunderstorm (which kept knocking out the already-sketchy internet altogether). Later, after deciding that we weren’t going to be able to wait out the rain, we bundled on rain gear, took the umbrella provided in our room, and walked to a nearby pub for dinner.
When we returned, we decided to build a fire to take the damp chill off.
Very cozy!
Very cozy indeed! Dullstroom doesn’t appear to be so dull... Lovely place.
